The Kaitou Kid Conan matches wits against in this episode is actually the second Kaitou Kid. The first was Kaito Kuroba's father, Toichi Kuroba. Toichi was a world-class magician and used his magic in his heists, much like Kaito does now as the new Kaitou Kid. Toichi as the first Kaitou Kid never really focused on a certain kind of target and was mainly active in Europe. Kaito as the second Kaitou Kid is mainly after jewels and is basically only active in Japan. It is revealed in Magic Kaito that Kaito is after a jewel known as Pandora which supposedly cries tears of immortality when held up to moonlight. Kaito's father was killed for this jewel, so Kaito is determined to find it and destroy it. The people who killed Toichi were most likely members of the Black Organization; the same organization responsible for shrinking Shin'ichi.
Note: "Kaito" means you are referring to the normal high school student. "Kaitou" means you are referring to the thief. It is important to be specific because the meaning changes entirely with the "u". - 1412:
As revealed in the episode, a writer twisted the numbers around to read KID. 14 is KI and 12 is D. Some people suggest that the interested writer may have been Yuusaku Kudou (Shin'ichi's father). In the manga series Magic Kaito, however, the thief was already being referred to as Kaitou Kid, so 1412 surely must have been the code number of the first Kaitou Kid; Kaito Kuroba's magician father. - Kaitou Kid's normal self is a high school boy by the name of Kaito Kuroba. The girl Kaito is walking with both times in the episode is Aoko Nakamori, the daughter of Inspector Nakamori who is the leader of the Kaitou Kid task force and investigation squad.

It's actually more accurate to say Shin'ichi looks like Kaito, but yes, they do look similar. Magic Kaito was a manga about Kaito Kuroba, the second Kaitou Kid, published before Aoyama began work on Detective Conan. Kaito and Aoko seem to have been the original concepts for Shin'ichi and Ran.
